Don Storms was born in 1955 in Peterson, New Jersey and raised in West Milford, NJ with his five brothers and one sister. Don learned to trout fish on a small wild trout stream known as the West Brook, which runs through his parent s property. He attended West Milford High School and graduated in 1974. After high school, Don enlisted in the Marine Corps from 1977-1981. In 1985, he married Nanette Elia from West Milford and moved to the nearby town of Oak Ridge. Don and Nan still live in Oak Ridge with their daughter Ashlie and son Ryan. Don’s fishing experiences have taken him and his family from Maine to the Florida Keys and west to Yellowstone, Metulious River in Oregon, Henry s Fork in Idaho, and the Catskill watershed in New York. Don started fly tying in 1983 through a class put on by the East Jersey Chapter of Trout Unlimited. After a few active years with the East Jersey Chapter, he joined the North Jersey Chapter closer to home. Don quickly became a member of the board of directors and fly tying instructor. Don served two years as chapter president and is a life member of Trout Unlimited. Don is an award winning fly tier, winning both the North East Fly-Tying Championship and the Mid Atlantic Fly-Tying Championship. He has a registered salmon fly named after his daughter’s middle name Chaynae’s Rainbow. Don s innovative flies have appeared in publications such as Tying Flies with Jack Dennis and Friends by Jack Dennis. Steelhead Fly Tying Guide by H. Kent Helvies, Rare and Unusual Fly Tying Materials by Paul Schmookler and Ingrid V. Sils, American Anglers, and Fly Fishing magazines. Don enjoys tying at fishing shows and giving tying classes on the east coast demonstrating his techniques and patterns. His patterns are also available by mail order. His Clear Water Caddis patterns are distributed wholesale for shops through Solitude Fly Company.
