Darrel is a contributing editor for Fly Rod & Reel magazine. He has published numerous articles, artwork and photography on various aspects of fly fishing in the major fly fishing magazines. He has also published eight books on flyfishing, including Imitations, The Waterlogue: A Fly Fishers` Workbook(1981), Fly Tyer`s Sketchbook (1981), and Fly Tying Methods (1987) which won the 1987 Book of the Year award presented by the United Fly Tyers of America.
Darrel has written the definitive book on the small fly: Micopatterns: Tying and Fishing the Small Fly (1994), and a Czech-English Dictionary of Angling. His most recent book is The Fly Fisher`s Illustrated Dictionary (2000). Darrel is especially fond of chalk streams and spring creeks and has fished for trout extensively throughout the American West, Canada, and Europe, including England, Sweden, Chile, Lithuania, Ireland, Norway, Finland,Austria, Zambia, Czech Republic, Croatia, and Slovenia.
